About the Department of Architecture
Community Design
The architecture department's approach to urban design, community planning, and related issues is colored, at least in part, by Penn State's location. The Hamer Center for Community Design Assistance helps facilitate interaction between the faculty and students in SALA and communities around the Commonwealth.
Due to the interest of some of our faculty, we focus not only on major metropolitan areas, but also "secondary cities," such as Harrisburg or Reading. We couple this regional focus with projects in such places as Philadelphia, Rome, New York, and Panama City.
- PANA (Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity) grant to research characteristics of healthy environments
- Philadelphia Unbuild/Rebuild
- Graduate student research in Panama City

- Professor Bret Peters’ fourth-year studio master plan study for Ocean City in 2004
- Professor Allan Ceen's urban cartography class in Rome
