Loukas Kalisperis has completed research in the areas of Design Computing and Teaching Methodologies, Virtual Environments in Architecture, Cultural Heritage Visualization, Digital Fabrication and Energy Systems Simulation. The emphasis of his research is in the area of integrating digital technology in design and digital design representation and fabrication techniques which can define a framework that would allowed for a shift in the use of digital media from documentation to design conceptualization and exploration. He is currently involved in research for immersive environments, multimodal representation, cultural heritage visualization and digital fabrication. One of the latest projects deals with representation techniques and processes in multi-modal environments and of human visual perception and its relation to the design and visualization processes. Additionally, he is involved in examining the design process from the virtual visualization techniques to the to new type of 3D working drawings describing the geometry and interconnection of the components and finally to a physical, scalable model produced by a digitally driven fabrication process. Current work investigates the manner in which the limits of human visual perception must be taken into consideration in developing worthwhile computer-representation models. This research has resulted in an architectural model based on the visual perception requirements of the design process. In this model designers utilize virtual space, removing unnecessary visual information, reducing visual noise, and increasing the useful field of attention, and improving the quality and accuracy of design decisions.

His research has resulted in numerous papers, book chapters, and presentations. He was Technical Co-chair of ACADIA '95, an International Conference of the Association of Computer-Aided Design in Architecture and co-editor of the book: Computing in Design: Enabling, Capturing and Sharing Ideas.   He has been on the Scientific Committees of numerous conferences and symposia on Digital Media in Architecture and Cultural Heritage. He was the recipient of the 2005 President's Award for Excellence in Academic Integration and the 2000 Apple Distinguished Educator Award .  He guest co-edited special volumes of the journals Automation in Construction and The International Journal of Architectural Computing on computer-based design aids and cultural heritage. He holds visiting teaching positions at the University of Brazilia, the University of Cyprus, the National Technical University of Greece, and the University of Bahia. Currently, he is a Visiting Professor and Distinguished Fellow at The Cyprus Institute.
