Architecture 121 - Visual Communications I
Abstract, symbolic, and representation of systems of communications. Development of visual and graphic skills and techniques. Prerequisite: First semester standing in the architecture curriculum. Concurrent: A&A 101

A&A102S/104 (Arch 197S/197B) - (3 credits each)
A&A 102S (Arch 197S) - The Design Studio is the fundamental model for eduction within design disciplines in the University. This course will serve as an introduction to the studio teaching model, a means to establish high expectations, an opportunity for a cross disciplinary approach, a disruption of conventional understandings, and an elevation role of the imagination. Concurrent: Arch 121

A&A 104 (Arch 197B) - The Art & Design Studio is the fundamental model for education within art and design disciplines in the University. As the second studio in the CORE series, the instructors of this course will strengthen the studio teaching model, exact high expectations, and continue to elevate of the role of the imagination. Prerequisite: First year standing in Architecture curriculum.

Introduction to Architectural Structural Systems
Qualitative study of architectural structural systems; historical development of structures; insights of structural analysis and synthesis; comparative structural types. Prerequisite: algebra, trigonometry

Art History 201 - (3 credits)
Ancient to Medieval Architecture
A survey of Prehistoric, Ancient Near Eastern Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, Early Medieval, Romanesque, and Gothic architecture

Art History 202 - (3 credits)
Renaissance to Modern Architecture
A survey of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococco, Romantic, Victorian, Modern, Post-Modern, and Contemporary architecture in Europe and America

Second Year

Architecture 231/232 - (5 credits each)
Architecture 231 - Basic Design and Research III
Design of limited environments within defined constraints. Prerequisite: A&A 104, second-year standing in architecture curriculum

Architecture 232- Basic Design and Research IV
Design of limited environments within defined constraints. Prerequisite: Arch 231, second-year standing in architecture curriculum

Architecture 203/204 - (3 credits each)
Architecture 203 - Materials and Building Construction I
Instruction in the design and construction of buildings utilizing wood and steel. Prerequisite: third-semester standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 204 - Materials and Building Construction II
This course will continue the presentations of Arch 203, with a focus on concrete and masonry materials. Prerequisite: Arch 203, fourth semester standing in the Architecture curriculum

Architectural Engineering 421 - (3 credits)
Architectural Structural Systems I
Qualitative and quantitative analsyis and design of architectural structures, force flow; structure configurations; measurement and experiments; design studio critique. Prerequisite: AE 210, 3 credits in mathematics

Architectural Engineering 422 - (3 credits)
Architectural Structural Systems II
Continuation of AE 421, with emphasis on structural configuration and construction assemblies. Prerequisite: AE 421

Third Year

Architecture 331/332 - (6 credits)
Architecture 331 - Design-Research I
Development of the design process through organizational methodologies, based on physical, functional, and social-behavioral development. Prerequisite: Arch 232, faculty review, third-year standing in architecture curriculum

Architecture 332 - Design-Research II
Development of the design process through organizational methodologies, based on physical, functional, and social-behavioral development. Prerequisite: Arch 331, third-year standing in architecture curriculum

Architectural Engineering 211 (3 credits)
Introduction to Environmental Control Systems
Qualitative study of humans in macro- and micro-architectural environmental systems

Architectural Engineering 424 (3 credits)
Environmental Control Systems I
Fundamental principles and applications of environmental systems in buildings.  Prerequisite: AE 211

Architecture 311W (3 credits)
Architecture 311W – Architectural and Planning Theories – Architectural theory course with a strong focus on the reading and writing of essays about architecture and related fields.  Prerequisite: A&A 103, fifth-semester standing in the architecture curriculum

Fourth Year

Architecture 431/432 (6 credits)
Architecture 431 – Design Research III
Continuation of Arch 331 and 332, with design and research in program option areas.  Prerequisite: Arch 332, fourth-year standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 432 – Design Research IV
Continuation of Arch 431, with design and research in program option areas.  Prerequisite: Arch 431, fourth-year standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 499A (6 credits)
Architecture 499A – Foreign Study – Design Research II – Individual or group instruction conducted in a foreign country.  Prerequisite: Arch 332, fourth-year standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 499B (3 credits)
Architecture 499B – Architectural Analysis
Comparative study of architectural elements and building types through on-site drawing/recording, measurement, sketching and decomposition activity.  Prerequisite: fourth-year standing in the architecture curriculum.  Concurrent: Arch 499A and Arch 499C

Architecture 499C (3 credits)
Architecture 499C – Urban Studies Topics
Focuses on architectural and urban design issues using Rome as a repository of examples and as a laboratory for experiments.  Prerequisite: fourth-year standing in the architecture curriculum.  Concurrent: Arch 499A and Arch 499B

Fifth Year

Architecture 491/492 (6 credits each)
Architecture 491 – Architectural Design-Thesis I
Problems in architectural planning and design; programming and/or implementation methodologies and applications for various environmental design scales.  Prerequisite: Arch 431 or Arch 432, Arch 499A, faculty review, fifth-year standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 492 – Architectural Design-Thesis II
Continuation of Arch 491 with concentration and specialization options.  Prerequisite: Arch 491, fifth-year standing in the architecture curriculum

Architecture 451 (3 credits)
Architecture 451 – Architectural Professional Practice
A study of architectural practice in today’s society:  education, registration, office practice, codes, standards, construction industry, contracts, and legal documents.  Prerequisite: seventh-semester standing in architecture curriculum

Architecture 480 (3 credits)
Architecture 480 – Technical Systems Integration
Presentations of buildings’ analyses from a multiplicity of viewpoints:  architectural, spacial, environmental, mechanical, construction assembly.  Prerequisite: fifth-year standing in the architecture curriculum or approval by instructor
