Student Scholarships and Awards
First-Year Design Excellence Award
Established by Penn State’s department of architecture.
PURPOSE: To recognize distinguish excellence in design studio at the first-year level.
ELIGIBILITY: First-year design students.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidates must consistently exhibit “excellence” in the two semesters of the design studios within the first-year.
SELECTION PROCESS: Faculty decision is made by the studio instructor of first-year.
AWARD: The recipient will receive a book selected by the design faculty of first year and a wooden column crafted in the architecture model shop and designed by Professor Emeritus Louis Inserra.
Kurt Kristian Stenman Award
Established by family and friends of Kurt Stenman in his memory.
PURPOSE: To honor and recognize outstanding academic achievement by an undergraduate student enrolled in the department of architecture.
ELIGIBILITY: Full-time second-year undergraduate students in architecture. Preference will be given to University Scholars and/or students who have graduated from South Western High School of the South Western School District, Hanover, PA.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must have excelled in first-year design and visual communications studio course work. The award will be presented to the student who received the highest G.P.A. in design studio and visual communications at the end of their first-year and continues in the program.
AWARD: One award shall be made annually based on available interest earned.
Second-Year Design Excellence Award

Leonard S. Fiore, Inc., Scholarship
Established by Leonard S. Fiore, Inc.
PURPOSE: To provide financial assistance to promising full-time undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll who have a proven need for funds to meet their necessary college expenses.
ELIGIBILITY: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all second-year full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in the department of architecture.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidates must have achieved above-average grades or manifested promise of academic success and have a proven financial need.
SELECTION PROCESS: Second-year design studio faculty will determine the winner based on financial and academic performance.
AWARD: Shall be based on available interest earned.
Alma Heinz and August Louis Pohland Awards

PURPOSE: Established to provide recognition and financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students in the school of architecture and llandscape architecture.
ELIGIBILITY: All second, third, and fourth-year architecture students are eligible to apply.
AWARD: Range between $700 and $1000.

Foreman Architects Engineers Study Abroad Scholarship
PURPOSE: To provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding upper level graduate students enrolled in the department of architecture.
ELIGIBILITY: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time third-year undergraduate students who will participate in a study abroad program during a semester in their fourth-year.
DEADLINE: One shall be awarded for fall semester and one shall be awarded for spring semester.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidates must have achieved a G.P.A. above the department’s minimum standard; have shown outstanding design capabilities and superior graphic talent; and have demonstrated a willingness and ability to help others.
PROCEDURE: Recipients of this scholarship shall be selected by the third-year faculty in the department of architecture and a representative from the Foreman Architects Engineers firm.
SELECTION PROCESS: A jury of third-year faculty and a representative from the Foreman Architects Engineers firm will make the selection.
AWARD: A total of two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each shall be awarded; one shall be awarded for fall semester and one shall be awarded for spring semester.
Grube Memorial Scholarship in Architecture
Established by the estate of the late Richard L. Grube, associate professor of architecture.
PURPOSE: To provide recognition and supplemental financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in the department of architecture international study-abroad program to allow for travel in a foreign land to view sights and experience the architecture.
ELIGIBILITY: Consideration for this scholarship will be given to all full-time third-year undergraduates who are taking part in the official department of architecture international study-abroad program.
REQUIREMENTS: Third-year students who participate in the study abroad program in Rome during their fourth-year of study.
PROCEDURE: Recipients of this scholarship shall be selected by the department of architecture scholarship committee.

A. William Hajjar and Anne Bortz Hajjar Memorial Scholarship
Established by Mark Hajjar, Mrs. Holly Hajjar Lorah and Mrs. Hanya Hajjar Gore to honor their mother An Bortz Hajjar and their father, the late William Hajjar, a professor and senior design critic in the architecture department from 1946 to 1965.
PURPOSE: To provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding third-year undergraduate students majoring in architecture who will participate in the semester abroad program during their fourth-year.
ELIGIBILITY: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all full-time third-year undergraduates majoring in architecture.
REQUIREMENTS: Participation in a juried design competition and in the fourth-year, participate in the semester abroad program.
PROCEDURE: Recipients of this scholarship shall be selected by the third-year faculty and jury participants.
AWARD: Support for this scholarship shall be contributed as an annual minimum $4,000 gift, for a period of at least one year. Annual contributions may be made by interested persons or organizations.

PURPOSE: Established to provide recognition and financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students in the school of architecture and landscape architecture.
ELIGIBILITY: All second, third, and fourth-year architecture students are eligible to apply.
AWARD: Range between $700 and $1000.
A.I.A./A.A.F. Scholarship
PURPOSE: To recognize students with the highest G.P.A. combined with a proven financial need.
ELIGIBILITY: All third and fourth-year students
PROCEDURE: Students will be notified when it is appropriate for them to submit an application to the department.
AWARD: Up to three awards may be acknowledged from A.I.A.

J. Henry and Minnie Hitz Memorial Endowment in Architecture
Established by J. Henry Hitz, Class of ’28 and his wife, Minnie Hitz.
PURPOSE: To provide program support monies for the architecture study abroad program and for school projects emphasizing creative design solutions.
ELIGIBILITY: Fourth-year students who participate in the study abroad program in Rome.
REQUIREMENTS: To be determined by the instructor of the study abroad program in Rome.
SELECTION PROCESS: Faculty decision is made by the instructor of the study abroad program in Rome.
AWARD: One annual award in the range of $500.
Ewing Cole Cherry Endowed Awards in Architecture and Architectural Engineering
Established by Ewing Cole Cherry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
PURPOSE: To reward fourth-year students who have achieved outstanding academic success in their major related studies.
REQUIREMENTS: For thedepartment of architecture, first preference shall be given to the student with the highest G.P.A. in the structural and design courses.
AWARD: Two $500 awards may be made each year – one each in the College of Arts and Architecture and the College of Engineering.
Reuben and Gladys Golumbic Scholarship Award Fund
Established by Ed Eckl for scholarship awards to students of the College of Arts and Architecture who can prove their potential for significant contribution to the arts and humanities.
ELIGIBILITY: Students of the College of Arts and Architecture with at least a fourth semester standing. A graduating senior is not eligible because the awarded monies are to be used the following year. The students must possess qualities and have contributed efforts that are considered outstanding as measured by the departments/schools. A total dedication to continued involvement in the arts and humanities is a prerequisite.
DEADLINE: Week prior to spring break.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must demonstrate superior abilities. Submitted with each nomination shall be a one or two page documentation of the candidate’s academic and extracurricular performance, and a statement, by a faculty sponsor, regarding the candidate’s potential for contribution to the arts and/or the humanities.
PROCEDURE: The candidate is nominated by the faculty of the department/school; receipt of the award is decided by the Arts and Architecture Scholarship and Award Committee.
AWARDS: Three awards are given, one for each of the following categories: Design Achievement, Humanistic Achievement, and Performance Achievement. The amount of the awards are determined annually by the interest earned on the principal of the scholarship fund.
Alma Heinz and August Louis Pohland Awards

Jamil E. Faridy Scholarship in Architecture
Established by friends and employees of Faridy Thorne Fraytak P.C. Architects in honor of Jamil E. Faridy.
PURPOSE: To provide recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in the department of architecture who have a demonstrated need for funds to meet their necessary college expenses.
ELIGIBILITY: Full-time undergraduate students enrolled in the fourth-year of the architecture program.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidate who has achieved superior academic records who manifest promise of outstanding success, and who has a demonstrated financial need.
SELECTION PROCESS: Year level and selection process to be determined.
AWARD: The number of scholarships awarded annually and the amount of each shall be determined based on available interest earned.
The Alpha Rho Chi Medal
Established by Alpha Rho Chi, National Professional Architectural Fraternity.
PURPOSE: To encourage professional leadership by rewarding student accomplishment. To promote the ideals of professional service by acknowledging distinctive individual contributions to school life. To stimulate professional merit by commending qualities in the student, which do not necessarily pertain to scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY: Graduating students of the department of architecture.
REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must have shown an ability for leadership, performed willing service for the department, and given promise of real professional merit through his or her attitude and personality.
SELECTION PROCESS: Faculty nominations and vote.
AWARD: Bronze medal.
ARCC/Architectural Research Centers Consortium
Established in honor of the late Jonathan King, co-founder and first president of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC).
PURPOSE: Awarded to the student the institution selects as most deserving of the award.
ELIGIBILITY: Member institutions can nominate either an undergraduate or graduate student based upon our own criteria that acknowledge innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research. The nominee must have been enrolled at the institution for at least one semester during the 2004/2005 or 2003/2004 academic years.
SELECTION PROCESS: Each institution must submit information on their nominee to Professor Brian R. Sinclair.
AWARD: One King Medal
(Student receives letter at awards reception. Complete nomination form by specified deadline).
The Paul M. Kossman Thesis Design Award in Architecture
Established by Paul Kossman, Kossman Development Corporation.
PURPOSE: To recognize the “best” fifth-year thesis design project.
ELIGIBILITY: Fifth-year thesis design students.
REQUIREMENTS: A completed thesis design project.
SELECTION PROCESS: Following student presentations at the Kossman Reviews an external jury will select the winner.
AWARD: A minimum cash prize of $2,500. This award money must be used by the student within a one-year period exclusively for travel to architectural sites. A report on the student travel is required and must be submitted to the department, with a copy provided to Paul Kossman, one year following receipt of the award.
The Paul M. Kossman Thesis Design Award Runner-Up and Honorable Mentions
Established by Paul Kossman, Kossman Development Corporation.
PURPOSE: A “second-best” thesis design project is selected to be awarded the prize money in the event that the primary recipient cannot travel within one year of the selection date. Honorable mentions are awarded to an indefinite number of projects at the discretion of the invited panel.
ELIGIBILITY: Fifth-year thesis design students.
REQUIREMENTS: A completed thesis design project.
SELECTION PROCESS: Following student presentations at the Kossman reviews an external jury will select the winner.
AWARD: Department recognition.
Fifth Year Faculty Award
Established by Penn State’s department of architecture.
PURPOSE: To recognize the fifth-year student showing outstanding performance in academic achievement as determined by the fifth-year faculty.
ELIGIBILITY: Fifth-year thesis design students.
REQUIREMENTS: A completed thesis design project.
SELECTION PROCESS: Fifth-year faculty decision following student presentations at the Kossman Reviews.
AWARD: The recipient will receive a book selected by the design faculty of each year and a wooden column crafted in the architecture model shop and designed by Professor Emeritus Louis Inserra.

Established by A.I.A./A.A.F. Scholarship Program.
PURPOSE: To recognize the top-ranking graduating student.
ELIGIBILITY: Graduating students of the department of architecture.
REQUIREMENTS: Criteria for “top-ranking” status has been determined to be the graduating student with the highest overall university G.P.A. The head of the department must complete the professional education services department form.
AWARD: An engraved medal.
The A.I.A. Henry Adams Runner-Up Certificate
Established by A.I.A./A.A.F. Scholarship Program.
PURPOSE: To recognize the second-ranking graduating student.
ELIGIBILITY: Graduating students of the department of architecture.
REQUIREMENTS: Criteria for “second top-ranking” status has been determined to be the graduating student with the highest overall university G.P.A. The head of the department must complete the professional education services department form.
AWARD: A certificate of merit.
Five-Year Design Excellence Award
Established by Penn State’s department of architecture.
PURPOSE: To recognize the fifth-year student with the highest G.P.A. in all required studios and visual communications.
ELIGIBILITY: Fifth-year thesis design students.
REQUIREMENTS: A completed thesis design project.
AWARD: The recipient will receive a certificate of merit from the department of architecture.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Foundation Traveling Fellowship Awards
PURPOSE: Established to recognize the need to assist young architects in broadening their education.
ELIGIBILITY: Each candidate must be a U.S. citizen and either attending, or recently graduated from, an accredited architectural school. Each candidate must submit a portfolio of his/her work.
PROCEDURE: A jury comprised of educators, professional architects, architecture critics, and other related professionals reviews all numbered portfolios. Once they have chosen two finalists in each of the categories, each finalist is identified and asked to interview with the jury the following week. The SOM Foundation provides lodging and transportation for out-of-town finalists to attend the interview. During the interview the finalist is asked to outline his/her proposed travel/study plans. The award recipient later formalized his/her plans to writing. Selection of fellows is based upon the combined process of portfolio review and jury interview.
AWARD: There are three categories of the Traveling Fellowship awards:
The Bachelor of Architecture Fellowship:
One traveling fellowship to a U.S. citizen who will graduate from an accredited (4+2 or 5 year) undergraduate professional degree program. A prize of $10,000 will be awarded.The First Professional Degree Master of Architecture Fellowship

Faculty Letters of Commendation
Established by Penn State’s department of architecture.
PURPOSE: To recognize students who have provided excellent service to the department and show outstanding professionalism.

SELECTION PROCESS: Faculty nomination and unanimous approval by the faculty.
AWARD: A letter of commendation.
LDA – L.D. Astorino Companies Endowment for the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
Established by LDA – L.D. Astorino Companies and Louis D. Astorino, Class of ’69.
PURPOSE: To support the international study-abroad program and projects emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches bringing together the expertise of different professions including architecture, landscape architecture and/or engineering.

Alma Heinz and August Louis Pohland Awards
Established by Joseph V. and Suzanne Pohland Paterno.
PURPOSE: To recognize and support outstanding graduate students.
ELIGIBILITY: All full-time graduate students in the school of architecture and landscape architecture exhibiting academic excellence.
REQUIREMENTS: A research thesis or terminal project.
PROCEDURE: The application process will include an application form, including a signature by the student’s primary advisor endorsing the application, a copy of the student’s final thesis/terminal project proposal and grades.
SELECTION PROCESS: A review of the proposals and decision will be made by members of the school of architecture and landscape architecture council.
AWARD: $2500 annually.
